Attorney General Addresses Hate Speech and Violence
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is poised to take action against speeches that “cross the boundaries of violence,” according to Attorney General Pam Bondi. This statement comes in light of recent discussions surrounding the murder of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
Bondi expressed her thoughts on the legal limits of free speech, emphasizing the need for restrictions on what she termed “hate speech.” This follows a wave of criticism from some conservative voices regarding her commitment to tackle such speech, particularly after a series of events on September 10 related to Kirk’s assassination in Utah. It seems tensions are high, particularly with the radical left allegedly normalizing threats and cheering for political violence.
“Hate speech that crosses into the realm of violence is not protected by the First Amendment,” Bondi stated. “It’s a crime. We have seen radical leftists celebrate threats and encourage violence, and that cycle must end.”
Bondi elaborated on federal laws that prohibit threatening communication, which includes the targeting of civil servants and members of Congress, as well as the act of “Doxing,” or publicly releasing personal information in a threatening manner.
“These actions are criminal and will be prosecuted with vigor,” she asserted.
In a podcast episode with Katie Miller, Bondi faced further scrutiny regarding the Trump administration’s stance on the First Amendment. She distinguished between free speech and hate speech, asserting there is no room for the latter in society, especially following Kirk’s tragic death.
Some on social media called for Bondi’s removal from her position, criticizing her stance as overreach. Matt Walsh, a commentator, insisted that conservatives have fought for rights related to free expression and should not be unfairly targeted.
In reiterating her response to Kirk’s murder, Bondi noted that there have been public protests against those who celebrated the incident. Reports suggest that even military reserve officers have faced consequences for their comments regarding the assassination.
“The violent rhetoric seeks to silence conservative voices,” Bondi stated defiantly. “We won’t be silenced—neither for our families nor our freedom. Charlie’s legacy will endure beyond fear and intimidation.”
