Trump Endorses Pamela Evette in South Carolina Gubernatorial Race

A week after President Trump’s winning streak in the Republican primaries ended, his endorsement of South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette has significantly bolstered her campaign to succeed the term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster.

As reported by the Associated Press, Evette received Trump’s endorsement about a week and a half before Tuesday’s primary, which puts her in a strong position heading into the upcoming runoff in two weeks. The critical question now is who will join her as the other major contender. The Republican lineup includes South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, as well as businessman Rom Reddy.

No candidate was expected to secure more than 50% of the primary vote, which means the top two candidates will progress to a runoff on June 23, with the winner likely emerging as the favorite for the general election in this predominantly Republican state.

Even though Trump won’t be on the ballot, his significant influence within the party is under scrutiny in this South Carolina race.

Trump’s support has proven effective recently, as seen in various Republican primaries across states like Indiana, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Texas, where his endorsed candidates unseated incumbents. However, an endorsement for Iowa Republican Rep. Randy Feenstra, during the race to replace retiring Gov. Kim Reynolds, didn’t secure the victory many expected.

Feenstra faced a surprising defeat against Zach Rahn, a powerful conservative supported by a prominent group aligned with Trump’s health agenda, known for its controversial ties.

The leading candidates in South Carolina’s Republican primary have made their allegiance to Trump and his policies clear in hopes of winning his approval. After a period of neutrality, Trump endorsed Evette, praising her as an “America First patriot” and declaring her a “winner.”

Interestingly, after Trump’s backing, Mace pointed out that her previous push for transparency regarding Epstein-related files may have affected Trump’s support for her rival.

In a social media statement, Trump hinted at the possibility of Evette selecting Gov. McMaster’s son, Henry McMaster Jr., as her running mate, leading to speculation and backlash among South Carolina political circles. McMaster himself, who succeeded the previous governor, has reportedly denied any pressure involved in this dynamic, and Evette has indicated she won’t disclose her running mate’s name until after the primary.

The younger McMaster later withdrew from contention, citing the timing as not right despite feeling honored by the speculation surrounding his candidacy for lieutenant governor.

The individual who emerges victorious in the Republican nomination is poised to be the strong frontrunner in the general election this November. On the Democratic side, State Rep. Jermaine Johnson, trial attorney William Mullins McLeod Jr., and businessman Billy Webster, who previously served under Democratic Gov. Richard Riley, are among those vying for their party’s nomination.
