Wreckage of 1952 Pan Am Flight Discovered
The remains of a Pan Am flight that crash-landed in the ocean near Puerto Rico in 1952 have been found. This tragic accident resulted in the loss of 52 lives and prompted the introduction of mandatory safety briefings for airline passengers.
Recent search efforts led teams to locate the wreckage of the DC-4 using an autonomous underwater vehicle with advanced sonar technology, discovering the tail section at a depth of around 2,000 feet.
At the time of the incident, the Clipper Endeavor was traveling from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to New York when it lost engine power and made a rough landing in the water.
Of the 17 survivors, they reported that while everyone managed to reach the landing, many struggled to find life jackets, and crew members had difficulty deploying life rafts. The plane submerged quickly.
The Civil Aviation Commission attributed the crash to inadequate maintenance leading to engine failure, as well as how the captain handled the situation after the power loss.
The chaos among the crew, who grappled with flotation devices, was a catalyst for significant changes in aviation safety, including mandatory pre-flight briefings and enhancements to flotation equipment.
This incident caught the interest of Russ Matthews, President of the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation. He began investigating the crash in 2019 after hearing that luggage tags from the flight had washed ashore in Florida.
His quest involved years of delving through Pan Am and Coast Guard records to find any hints regarding the wreck’s location, using data from reports by the Civil Aeronautics Board, a predecessor of the FAA.
The turning point in finding the wreck came from a transcript of a public hearing held in Puerto Rico and a map purportedly created by an Air Force pilot who saw the crash during a training mission.
Two years ago, a previous attempt to locate the wreckage was called off due to poor weather. However, Matthews and his team are optimistic about making another attempt ahead of the crash’s 75th anniversary next year, utilizing more sophisticated drones originally designed for military operations.
Tony Romeo, CEO of Deep Sea Vision, has been discussing the potential of aiding in the search if Matthews’ ship reaches the area. In April, one of his vessels was en route near Puerto Rico, equipped with an advanced underwater drone suitable for locating aircraft.
“Everything aligned: the weather, the right crew, equipment, and boat. So we went ahead,” Romeo remarked, noting that his father worked as a Pan Am mechanic and pilot.
Previous efforts by Deep Sea Vision included a lengthy mission to search for Amelia Earhart’s aircraft, which did not succeed.
Combining Matthews’ research with historical weather data from the crash period, a map pinpointing probable locations was created, covering an area of about 10 square nautical miles. On the drone’s initial pass, it identified the wreckage, but it wasn’t until it returned with images that the find was recognized.
