Former Vice President Kamala Harris faced criticism during a CNN panel on Friday for her vague responses in an interview with Stephen Colbert, broadcast the night before.
In the interview on The Late Show, Harris discussed her decision not to run for governor of California, making sweeping statements like, “For now, I don’t want to go back to the system. I think it’s broken.” This left many, including CNN White House correspondent Jasmine Wright, expressing skepticism about her clarity. She pointed out that terms like “systems” might be too ambiguous for most Americans to understand.
Wright remarked, “I think what people want is a solution, and she wasn’t providing one.” She noted that Harris has not articulated anything substantial for quite some time. Panel host Manu Raju echoed this sentiment, saying, “She hasn’t really said anything for six months.” CNN senior reporter Aaron Blake added that there seemed to be a lack of a cohesive message from Democrats overall, noting, “Maybe that’s because no one has the weight and constant presence in our everyday lives to drive that message.”
Some panelists were surprised by Harris’s guarded demeanor during the Colbert interview, suggesting it reflected her distance from key campaign issues. Michelle Price from the Associated Press commented on Harris’s robotic nature in public appearances, indicating this has been a long-standing issue for her.
Price also pointed out the absence of a leadership message or a clear path for progress, leaving viewers puzzled about what issues Harris was addressing. Meanwhile, Wright highlighted that Harris had not adequately explained the failures of her campaign. “It’s important for her to be genuinely honest about what went wrong,” she stressed, wondering if an upcoming listening tour she’s planning might provide some clarity in the future.
