CNN Panelists Debate DeCarlos Brown’s Future After Violent Crime
CNN panelists have recently pushed back against the idea that DeCarlos Brown, who killed a Ukrainian refugee in Charlotte, North Carolina, should be committed for life due to his mental health issues and extensive criminal record.
One liberal panelist noted that Brown had already served time for 14 past offenses and questioned whether it was appropriate to incarcerate him for life, despite the obvious risks to public safety. Emotional moments unfolded on “CNN Newsnight,” where National Review columnist Caroline Downey emphasized that someone with schizophrenia and a history of violence shouldn’t be allowed to walk freely among the community.
Host Abby Phillip remarked, “He has served time for violent crimes in the past.” In response, Downey emphasized that Brown’s schizophrenia exacerbated his dangerous tendencies, particularly recalling a recently reported violent incident on a train.
Philip did not mention that North Carolina Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes had released Brown without bail earlier this year, merely requiring a “written promise” for a court appearance. After his release, Brown exhibited increasingly aggressive behavior, leading his mother to fear for her safety and eventually ask him to leave her home.
Panelists expressed their outrage, with Downey arguing that Brown’s schizophrenia was linked to his erratic and violent actions. She asserted that his ongoing criminal behavior demonstrated the need for lifelong confinement in a mental health facility.
“He posed a threat to the public,” she said. “He was a danger to society.” Another panelist, Keith Boykin, voiced disbelief at the suggestion that someone should be imprisoned indefinitely because of their mental health condition. Downey had to clarify her stance multiple times, insisting that Brown should indeed be placed in institutional care.
She argued that failing to confine individuals like Brown could result in more innocent lives being taken.
Brown is accused of fatally stabbing Irina Zaltoska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, with a pocket knife on a light rail train, during which he was heard muttering, “I got that white girl.” Security footage revealed that bystanders remained seated as the tragedy unfolded.
This week, federal prosecutors charged Brown, potentially facing life in prison or even the death penalty for his actions in the transit system.
