Panel Discussion on Biden and Newsom
During a recent CNN panel, Bakari Sellers compared Hunter Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom to an unusual political duo reminiscent of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” He pointed out that some Democrats seem to appreciate the tenacity that both men bring to discussions, particularly during a debate about Biden supporting Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Plattner.
“You had two people together for a specific purpose, right? One purpose only,” Sellers remarked. He also suggested that Gavin Newsom gained popularity through a mix of confidence and a strong online presence, much like former President Donald Trump. When looking at Hunter Biden in comparison, it gets a bit strange, he said—like, you know, very much like a children’s cartoon pairing.
Biden Defends Plattner
The discussion came following a televised segment where Biden defended Plattner alongside Newsom, amidst ongoing debates within the Maine Democratic Party. Biden asserted, “I’ve never heard anything that suggested he is abusive or misogynistic.” He highlighted that Plattner’s progressive policies, such as advocating for free healthcare, deserve recognition. “I mean, he thinks we need to change our politics fundamentally,” Biden noted.
Reactions from Democrats
CNN anchor Abby Phillip commented that some Democrats seem to be rallying around Biden despite concerns about his family’s controversies. She mentioned, “Most people don’t really think much about Hunter Biden. Still, it’s odd to see some thinking, ‘Hey, he’s taking on Trump online. We should encourage that.’ But, um, maybe it makes sense?”
Former DNC communications director Xochitl Hinojosa advised caution among Democrats regarding endorsing Plattner on a national scale, given that women are a critical voting bloc. “Women make up a majority, especially among independents,” she explained, reflecting on their importance in upcoming elections.
Concerns About Platner’s Scandal
Addressing the allegations surrounding Plattner, Hinojosa expressed concern that these could pose significant risks for Democrats looking forward to the midterms and even the 2028 elections. “It’s not wise for the national Democratic Party to be in a tricky spot right now. They need to capture votes from women,” she explained, highlighting the potential pitfalls for the Democrats.
Platner, an oyster farmer and Marine veteran, recently clinched the Democratic Senate nomination and is set to face Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November elections. He is under close scrutiny for past social media remarks and controversies related to certain tattoos and explicit content.
