Panelists debate AOC’s widely discussed comments on Taiwan

Progressive commentators had a lively discussion on Monday regarding Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent comments on foreign policy, which went viral. YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen and Ana Kasparian from “The Young Turks” joined a panel on the show “Piers Morgan Uncensored.” They addressed Ocasio-Cortez’s hesitance when asked if the U.S. should send troops to protect Taiwan.

During her response, Ocasio-Cortez appeared to struggle, hesitantly stating, “Um, you know, this is very, well, this is, um, um, of course, this is very long-standing U.S. policy.”

Despite criticism from both conservative and liberal circles, Cohen argued that the backlash directed at her was “grossly unfair,” especially considering the complexity of the topic. He noted, “I think what she’s basically asking here is whether the United States should engage in what could be tantamount to war with the other greatest global superpower on the planet, and that’s not an easy question.” He acknowledged her initial stutter but praised her emphasis on diplomacy as a better approach compared to the often aggressive stance of former President Trump.

Kasparian, while agreeing with Cohen about the shortcomings of Trump’s foreign policy, insisted that Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, should be held to a higher standard. “We need to stop covering up their mediocrity. That answer was terrible, and you know it,” she stated firmly.

When Cohen asked for a more acceptable answer from her perspective, Kasparian expressed that a sensible response would be what Cohen suggested, asserting that Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks were “just word salad nonsense.” She believed that Ocasio-Cortez should have been better prepared before engaging in discussions at a significant event like the Munich Security Conference. “She didn’t know what she was talking about,” Kasparian said, pointing out that it made her look unprepared.

Some moderate and liberal voices have recognized that Ocasio-Cortez’s comments were lacking, with a few labeling them as “one of the biggest mistakes” in her career.

In her remarks regarding the conference, Ocasio-Cortez clarified that her visit was not linked to any presidential ambitions but rather a call to address the growing inequality that fuels far-right movements. She emphasized the need to alert those in attendance about pressing issues that might soon affect their stability.
