Panthers dismiss defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero following loss to Packers in significant change

Panthers Shake Up Coaching Staff

The Carolina Panthers have made an early coaching change in the NFL season, firing defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley following a 27-19 defeat against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. This loss marked the Panthers’ second consecutive defeat, dropping their record to 3-4.

As a response, the Panthers have appointed defensive line coach Todd Wash as the interim defensive coordinator and play-caller. This shift comes at a critical time, with the team still leading the NFC South despite their recent struggles.

Evero, who is 45, had been with the Panthers since 2024 under head coach Dave Canales. His first year was challenging, as the defense ranked last in the league, allowing an average of 31.4 points per game. However, there was a notable improvement in 2025, where the team allowed 23 points per game, placing them in the middle of the pack at 16th overall. Unfortunately, the defense has taken a step back this season, giving up 27.6 points per game, ranking them 27th in the NFL, and injuries have played a significant role in this decline.

Key injuries have sidelined starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, with backup cornerback Akayleb Evans also placed on injured reserve. Furthermore, linebackers Nic Scourton and Thomas Incoom, and defensive tackle Cam Jackson are also recovering from injuries.

Even with a 3-4 record, the Panthers remain in a favorable position within their division, and coach Canales is optimistic that Wash can energize the defense as they pursue a second straight NFC South title.

Wash, who has been part of the Panthers’ coaching team since 2023, brings extensive experience to the role, having spent 31 years in coaching, including 20 years in the NFL. Notably, he served as the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, overseeing a unit that was ranked second in the league in 2017 and advanced to the AFC Championship game.

Additionally, AC Carter, the outside linebackers coach and run game specialist, will take on extra responsibilities by coaching the defensive line.

The Panthers will aim to turn things around when they face the Denver Broncos (5-2) in a week.
