Panthers’ McMillan Named Rookie of the Year Amid Controversy
Tetairoa McMillan, the standout receiver for the Carolina Panthers, has just been recognized as the 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year. This announcement follows a rather rocky moment where he apologized for using a racial slur during an esports event on Wednesday night.
McMillan’s award came after he edged out other notable players, including New York Giants quarterback Jackson Dart and New England Patriots running back Treveyon Henderson.
His controversial moment occurred during Streamer Bowl VII—a charity esports tournament held before the Super Bowl—where he was audibly heard using a slur after an interception.
On Thursday, McMillan took to Instagram to express his remorse. He admitted, “During a live broadcast yesterday, I used a word that I shouldn’t have. There’s no excuse for what I said. I sincerely apologize for my thoughtless words and intend to improve.”
Following the incident, he received inquiries regarding his comments, but the focus returned swiftly to his impressive performance on the field. McMillan had an outstanding first season, hitting 70 receptions on 122 attempts for a total of 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Panthers were in need of a high-impact player, and McMillan proved to be crucial to their success, helping them secure the NFC South championship. In the playoffs, even though the Panthers lost at home in the first game, McMillan had five catches for 81 yards against the Los Angeles Rams, showcasing his connection with quarterback Bryce Young throughout the match.
Although the postseason didn’t go as hoped for the Panthers, the team remains optimistic about their future with players like McMillan paving the way for success.
