Paolini triumphs over Gauff to claim the Italian Open and make history

Jasmine Paolini’s Historic Win at the Italian Open

Jasmine Paolini has made history by becoming the first Italian to win the Italian Open in four decades, triumphing over Coco Gauff with a commanding score of 6-4, 6-2. The 29-year-old athlete, who impressed many by reaching the finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon last year, expressed her happiness with the outcome at Italico.

Before Paolini’s win, it had been since 1985 that an Italian clinched a singles title in Rome, when Raffaella Reggi took the prize. Jannik Sinner, another rising star, also advanced in the tournament by defeating Carlos Alcaraz. “I can’t quite wrap my head around it,” Paolini remarked, noting how as a child, she attended this very tournament but never dreamed of winning it.

During the trophy presentation, the audience erupted in cheers, chanting “I, I, Oar, Jasmine, Jasmine,” to which Paolini responded with a heart gesture. “The crowd was just amazing,” she shared, clearly moved.

Additionally, Paolini and partner Sara Errani are set to compete in the women’s doubles final, facing off against Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens. “There’s still more to come,” Paolini remarked, acknowledging that the journey isn’t over yet.

In her match, Paolini secured the tight first set before capitalizing on a series of errors from Gauff in the second. With this victory, Paolini is expected to rise to World No. 4, thus securing a top four seed for the upcoming French Open next Sunday.

On the other hand, Coco Gauff, after experiencing a rough patch in European clay tournaments, still managed to finish as the runner-up in two major events.

In another noteworthy development, Katie Boulter is celebrating reaching her first clay court final at the Trophy Clarines in Paris. Competing at the WTA 125 level, she defeated France’s Barbara Gracheva with scores of 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 and will now face another local player, Chloe Paquet, in the final.
