Paramount Settles Trump Lawsuit for $16 Million
Paramount has reached a $16 million settlement in a lawsuit brought by former President Donald Trump, related to the editing of a CBS “60 Minutes” interview featuring then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who was also the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024.
Reports indicate that this settlement money is earmarked for Trump’s future presidential library rather than being paid directly to him. Paramount also made it clear that the agreement does not involve any apology.
Trump’s legal team asserted that the editing of Harris’s interview caused him “mental anguish.” The claim centers around allegations that CBS News had manipulated the footage to present Harris as more articulate and composed, downplaying any moments that might suggest the opposite.
This agreement, facilitated through a mediator, also includes a stipulation that future transcripts of interviews with U.S. presidential candidates on “60 Minutes” will be released, although some parts may be redacted for legal or national security reasons, as reported by CBS News.
Trump, who had previously declined an invitation to be interviewed by “60 Minutes” during his 2024 campaign, pointed out that the program aired different responses from Harris to the same question by correspondent Bill Whitaker. These answers ended up being broadcast separately—one on “60 Minutes” and the other earlier on “Face the Nation.”
CBS defended the situation by claiming that the two responses were simply edited from her longer comments for the sake of clarity.
Despite this, Trump’s attorney, Edward Andrew Paltzik, maintained that the editing led to voter confusion, further exacerbating the “mental anguish” felt by Trump. Recently, CBS News President and CEO Wendy McMahon, as well as “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens—both of whom were against settling the lawsuit—have resigned.
