The father of a woman from Illinois, who tragically lost her life in a drunk driving incident involving an undocumented immigrant, is urging Americans to reconsider how driver licensing laws are applied. During a recent California gubernatorial debate, Democrat Katie Porter expressed her intent to challenge the Trump administration regarding tougher English proficiency requirements for truck drivers.
This issue has garnered attention due to several recent fatal accidents involving undocumented drivers. One case involved Harjinder Singh, who allegedly made an illegal U-turn in Florida last August, resulting in a crash that claimed three lives, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security.
In another troubling incident, Bekzan Bayshekeyev, an undocumented immigrant from Kyrgyzstan, reportedly caused a major accident after failing to stop a speeding truck, which led to a collision with a van carrying multiple people. Four individuals died as a result, according to DHS.
Joe Abraham, whose daughter Katie was killed by a drunk driver who was in the country illegally, shared his concerns with FOX News Digital regarding the dangers of allowing undocumented individuals to obtain driver’s licenses without thorough vetting. He warned that failing to implement adequate checks could lead to more tragedies like the one his family is enduring.
“What we’re doing is removing safeguards,” he expressed. “We need to have a real understanding of who’s entering our communities. The man who killed Katie was not identified until he was jailed; he had HIV and went undetected.” He stressed the importance of having a process in place to ensure public safety.
Recalling the circumstances surrounding Katie’s death, he mentioned that she was killed in a hit-and-run accident perpetrated by Julio Cucurbor, an illegal immigrant who received a 30-year prison sentence for fleeing the scene.
Abraham emphasized the need for English proficiency, suggesting that it’s a matter of common sense. “We need to find where the gaps are and tighten them,” he said, arguing that understanding the language is key to assimilating into society. He voiced his frustrations with politicians who seem to overlook basic, practical measures in favor of more ideological stances.
Reflecting on his daughter’s vibrant personality, he described Katie as a “beautiful person” who was charismatic and deeply engaged with those around her. She was a talented water polo player and swimmer, full of life at just 20 years old, leaving behind many dreams that remain unfulfilled.
