Parents Arrested in Connection with Missing Infant

The parents of a seven-month-old boy in Southern California were apprehended on suspicion of murder following the child’s alarming disappearance, authorities reported on Friday.

Jake Halo, 32, and Rebecca Halo, 41, were arrested at their residence in Cabazon, located about 90 miles east of Los Angeles, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office. The department emphasized that they would maintain their search for Emmanuel Halo.

“This is a tragic situation, and we’re committed to finding Emmanuel,” said Sheriff Shannon Dikas of San Bernardino County. “We trust that the judicial system will hold the parents responsible.”

The child went missing on August 14. His mother claimed she had taken him to soccer practice with her husband before they made a stop at a nearby Big 5 Sporting Goods Store in Yucaipa to purchase a mouthguard.

According to authorities, Rebecca Halo alleged that she was attacked while changing Emmanuel’s diaper in the store parking lot. She described a moment where someone greeted her with “hola” before everything went dark.

“I woke up on the floor, but my son is gone,” she remarked in a recent interview.

Investigators noted that there was no security footage available from the area during the incident, and an Amber Alert was not activated due to insufficient information about suspects or vehicles, which didn’t meet the necessary criteria.

As the investigation progressed over the weekend, the couple reportedly stopped cooperating with law enforcement. Detectives mentioned that contradictions were found in the mother’s initial statements.

“Multiple interviews were conducted, including those with the parents, Jake and Rebecca Halo,” the department explained. “During questioning, inconsistencies in Rebecca’s statement were noted, leading to her decision to halt the interview.”

Following extensive interviews and review of digital evidence, investigators concluded that Emmanuel is deceased and a search for his remains is underway.

Video footage shared by the sheriff’s office shows the parents being handcuffed and taken into custody from their home.

Jake Halo had previously pleaded guilty to a child abuse charge in Riverside County back in 2018 and was on probation at the time of his most recent arrest, as reported by local news.

In a statement, Jake’s attorney clarified that he had not served a four-year prison sentence, but had reached a plea agreement acknowledging his involvement in previous incidents.

The case has drawn the attention of various advocacy organizations, including the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, which initially offered a $5,000 reward for information regarding Emmanuel’s whereabouts but retracted the offer shortly after.

In a statement, the Uvalde Foundation expressed cautious optimism regarding the recent arrests, commending the investigators’ persistence. They emphasized their ongoing focus on Emmanuel’s recovery.

Furthermore, Daniel Chapin, founder of the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, called for a thorough investigation into all aspects of Emmanuel’s disappearance, including the involvement of his grandmother.

“It’s essential that the role of the grandmother be examined thoroughly,” Chapin stated. “The community needs answers, and this innocent child deserves justice. We will continue to advocate for Emmanuel until those responsible are held accountable.”
