Parents were furious when a scantily clad drag queen performed at a New Mexico high school’s senior prom last week.
A video released at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School’s senior prom went viral after it showed the drag artist, identified by local news outlets as Mishika Sarleen, dancing as dozens of teenagers watched. Ta.
Some girls joined in on the fun and danced with Sarlene, who wore a bodysuit, thigh-high boots, and padded pantyhose.
However, the children’s parents slammed the show as “vulgar” and “highly inappropriate”, leaving them wondering how the school could have invited such performers to a teenage party.
“Why didn’t parents warn us that something like this would happen at a school event? This is still a school event, and whether it’s a school dance or a sport, parents should be made aware of the situation. parents should be informed about what’s going on,” said Morgan, the mother of a student at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School. told KRQE News 13.
Morgan added that she has sent multiple children to Atrisco Heritage Academy High School and had no issues through the 2023-24 school year.
“It looks like they’re failing this year. Students are failing, parents are failing. To me, this is a failure across the board,” she continued.
“What did they think they would get out of it? It’s so inappropriate,” said another parent, who requested anonymity.
Another parent said she requested a refund for her child’s prom ticket.
The performance also had a negative impact on Sarlene, who told KRQE News 13 that she was not hired to the prom, but was invited.
Since the video gained national attention, the performers have received death threats and threats against their employers.
On Thursday, Sarlene deleted the derogatory and hateful comments from her social media pages.
Albuquerque Public Schools told parents in a letter Wednesday that “the district is aware of this performance and has begun an investigation into what happened and how students were affected.” .
How the drag queen was invited to the prom remains a mystery, but Atrisco Heritage Academy High School has since quietly changed its principal.
Neither the high school nor the school district immediately responded to The Post’s requests for comment.
