Internal Strife Within Democratic Socialists After Mamdani’s Election

Leaders of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are questioning their commitment to the organization following the election of New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani. Since he assumed office in November, some DSA members and branches have voiced criticism regarding his choices, particularly his decision to keep NYPD Chief Jessica Tisch.

There’s a notable rift among socialists regarding the approach to reaching their goals. While the DSA has officially supported Mamdani, sentiments of discontent are emerging among those who feel compromised by his collaboration with figures outside of their ideology. This division seems to highlight, perhaps, a broader debate on how to achieve radical change while navigating traditional political frameworks.

City Journal analyst Stu Smith pointed out that some of Mamdani’s supporters are already frustrated, particularly in response to his meeting with President Trump and his decision to retain Tisch. This unease seems to stem from a growing faction that views electoral politicians like Mamdani as conforming too closely to traditional political norms, which they perceive as counterproductive.

Mamdani has not addressed these concerns publicly. The DSA played a crucial role in his victory, mobilizing over 99,000 supporters through various outreach efforts, advocating for the abolition of police and prisons. Interestingly, Mamdani’s past dedication to dismantling the NYPD and criticism of Israel contrasts sharply with his current stance of cooperation with law enforcement, which he has framed as necessary for combating antisemitism.

While he still has ties to the DSA, his transition team includes over 400 individuals, among them 26 members from the organization’s NYC chapter, focusing on crucial areas like housing and education. One key figure, an advocate for police abolition, even warned Mamdani against appointing Tisch.

The pro-Palestinian group Within Our Lifetime criticized Mamdani’s choices, claiming that retaining Tisch represents a political drift away from the values his campaign purported to champion. This sentiment was echoed in a statement signed by multiple DSA chapters and factions.

Smith emphasized the visible fractures in Mamdani’s support base. He speculated that Mamdani could find himself in a situation similar to Chicago’s left-wing mayor, Brandon Johnson, where a deeply unpopular figure remains buoyed by a faction of staunch supporters. Smith also noted that, regardless of Mamdani’s individual fate, the DSA’s electoral strategy is unlikely to change.

Just weeks before Mamdani’s election, key members of the DSA’s Liberation Caucus expressed various concerns about his stances on issues like Zionism and criminal justice. Although they criticized him, they later released a video expressing conditional support for his administration following the election.

In a candid video, a member of the DSA’s International Committee warned of inevitable mistakes under Mamdani’s leadership, reminding supporters that criticism and accountability are essential, especially in a capitalist system. They stressed the need to cultivate better candidates for future leadership roles while continuously advocating for the party’s growth.
