On Wednesday morning, Republicans and Democrats exchanged sharp words as the federal government entered its first day of shutdown. A chairperson of the Republican Research Committee from Texas stated that “Democrats will make this choice, Democrats will force this crisis,” suggesting that hardworking Americans will ultimately bear the consequences of what he described as a reckless agenda.
The government shutdown officially began just after midnight on Wednesday. This followed the Senate’s failure to move forward with a short-term funding bill known as the Continuing Resolution (CR). Only three Democrats joined the GOP’s efforts on Tuesday night, but the measure still fell short of the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster.
As a result, several federal services will come to a halt temporarily. Some government employees, including military and air traffic controllers, are expected to work without pay during this period.
Veteran services and military operations will still receive funding, and Social Security payments will continue. However, a memo from Russ Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), indicated that some federal workers might face job losses.
Republicans are blaming Democrats for the shutdown, while Democrats claim that Republicans are refusing to engage in necessary negotiations. A representative from Virginia noted that federal workers are left uncertain about their next paycheck, criticizing “Trump and his rubber stamp Republicans” for not collaborating to find solutions.
In Ohio, a Republican representative remarked that the shutdown represents the destructive tactics used by the left against Americans. A similar sentiment was echoed by Senator Nick Langworthy, who pointed to issues stemming from the Democrats’ own proposals that aim to reverse cuts made to healthcare funding by the GOP.
Democrats are also advocating to include subsidies for Obamacare in the CR, as these will expire this year unless extended. Kweisi Mfume, a Democratic representative from Maryland, lamented the impact on federal employees, stating this government shutdown was completely preventable.
Senator Benny Thompson remarked that Democrats oppose budgets that could lead to a healthcare crisis to fund what he called the destruction of democracy. In response, a first-term lawmaker from Texas asserted that it is the Democrats who initiated this crisis, highlighting the potential negative effects on various essential programs and services, including food aid and military salaries.
The Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have also been trading blame regarding the situation. The Senate is poised to vote on the CR again on Wednesday.
