Partner shares thoughts following Sha'carri Richardson's domestic violence arrest

Christian Coleman, an American sprinter, spoke out in support of his girlfriend, Sha’Carri Richardson, following her arrest for domestic violence at Seattle and Tacoma International Airports last month.

During an interview at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championship, Coleman shared that Richardson felt her arrest was unwarranted and was upset by the negative narratives surrounding their situation.

“I personally think that was pretty serious,” Coleman commented. They had participated in the 100 and 200 meters, but their issues affected their ability to compete in the upcoming World Championships. “I don’t believe she should have been arrested. Arguments happen, feelings get involved. She, of course, has things she needs to address,” he added.

“She’s a real person, a remarkable individual… She contributes a lot. It’s not that she doesn’t grasp what’s happening; she just deals with a lot internally,” Coleman expressed.

“But I’m the kind of person who believes in showing grace, mercy, and love. Negative stories, yeah… I really don’t like them. Even when talking to a police officer about it, he mentioned there was little he could do,” Coleman explained.

The Associated Press reported that the TSA alerted the police about a disturbance involving Coleman and Richardson.

Officials reviewing the security footage noted that Richardson seemed to pull on Coleman’s backpack, causing him to be pushed against a wall. Officers indicated they were trying to help Coleman navigate around her while she repeatedly stepped in front of him.

It appeared that Richardson was also throwing something at Coleman, speculated to be a pair of headphones.

“I get it… she’s an incredible person,” Coleman reiterated. “We’ve worked together well all year. There’s this strong chemistry between us because we are both dominant personalities. To me, she’s the best female athlete in the world, and I admire her every day.”

“There’s a lot going on with her. I’m not fully aware of it, but I see a range of feelings and strengths that aren’t easy for anyone else to understand,” he concluded.

Richardson, aged 25, was charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault and processed by the Southern Corrections Group in Des Moines, Washington, on July 27. She was released about 19 hours later.

Coleman, a gold medalist and three-time World Champion, did not pursue any allegations and chose not to view himself as a victim, as noted in a police report.

“USATF is aware of this situation but has not publicly commented,” USA Athletics noted in a statement.

Richardson opted not to speak with reporters at the US Championships, according to USA Today.

The couple has been together for more than two years.

Richardson narrowly missed qualifying for the final round in the 200 meters at the US Athletics Championships but is still set to return to the World Championships as the defending champion from Tokyo in September.

Earlier, in January 2023, Richardson mentioned being removed from an American Airlines flight following a disagreement with a flight attendant.

A positive test for marijuana during the 2021 US Olympic trials had kept Richardson from competing in Tokyo. However, she later achieved victory in the 2024 Paris Games, securing a silver medal in the individual 100 meters and gold in the 4×100 meter relay.
