On a recent flight, an image shared on the “R/Delta” subreddit captured a striking moment that stirred quite the debate. It showed a man lounging with his bare feet up on the seat in front of him, an act many deemed inappropriate for an airplane setting.
Reddit users flocked to the comments, sharing their thoughts and personal anecdotes about in-flight behavior.
Experts say passengers can be removed for going barefoot
One commenter likened the behavior to “clipping nails in public,” while another remarked, “This isn’t your mom’s basement.” Someone else chimed in with, “Living Room Syndrome strikes again.”
Another user expressed their concern: “This is why I travel with Clorox Wipes on a plane.” When asked if they confronted the barefoot passenger, the original poster noted they did, and the man at least put his socks back on.
Jacqueline Whitmore, an etiquette expert from Florida and a former flight attendant, emphasized the importance of covering one’s feet during flights. She stated it best when she said, “From an etiquette perspective, it’s rude to walk barefoot in public places because it allows you to transfer a lot of bacteria from your feet.” She advised that if travelers choose to take off their shoes on long flights, wearing slippers would be a healthier and safer option.
Whitmore also pointed out that airplane floors can be quite dirty, especially near the bathrooms where the water on the floor may not even be clean.
She added that fellow passengers might find it uncomfortable or even unhygienic to see someone walking around barefoot, which could detract from their travel experience. To strike a balance between comfort and hygiene, she recommended wearing clean socks, slippers, or more appropriate shoes.
