Pat LaFontaine Talks About Islanders’ Recent Success

DETROIT — Pat LaFontaine, during his induction into the Islanders Hall of Fame on Saturday, didn’t get the chance to discuss the current team on the ice. However, he shared his positive thoughts with reporters during a break in the Isles’ 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay. It seems he’s quite impressed, like many, with their recent performance.

“With all the talent and enthusiasm, I noticed [Matthew] Schaefer observing a young player, Cal Richie. Also, [Max] Shabanov caught my eye; the speed of the game is back,” LaFontaine remarked. “The hustle and team speed are really noticeable. It’s exciting to watch.”

That’s definitely good news for Patrick Roy.

The Islanders have made noticeable strides in the seven months since Mathieu Darche became the general manager. As they head into Tuesday’s match against Detroit, they’ve won six of their last seven games, showcasing their progress.

At all levels of the organization, changes are apparent. Roy, who has brought in his own assistant coach and started implementing his approach, seems much happier and more relaxed than last year. The positive energy is even reflecting in the locker room.

It’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg scenario, particularly regarding Schaefer, an 18-year-old rising star making a mark in the league. However, what’s clear is that the Islanders, who had struggled to win in recent seasons, have now learned how to do just that and are contending for the Metropolitan Division.

“It’s a significant shift,” Roy said on Saturday, emphasizing the newfound confidence as the game headed into overtime—a situation where the team had previously faltered. “We’re approaching games with joy, compassion, and a touch of swagger. It’s all about clarity.”

He reflected on how maintaining that presence heading into the third period can genuinely alter game outcomes. “Even if we slip up and allow a goal, it doesn’t derail our strategy. We stick to our game.”

Roy has consistently communicated the importance of playing with joy and confidence, particularly after a tough season filled with struggles that eventually led to a change in management. It feels like the right approach for this group right now.

His attitude has visibly shifted as well. A year ago, he often expressed emotional strain after losses, even criticizing players publicly. While those frustrations still existed, he seems more composed this season. And winning certainly helps, though one can’t help but wonder how different it would be if they weren’t. Perhaps this transition enhances the environment around the Islanders.

“I’m excited to watch,” LaFontaine stated. “What we’re aiming for is to build an exciting team.” Indeed, they’ve become quite the spectacle to watch.

“I’ve known Patrick for a long time, and it’s evident how he’s beginning to assemble a cohesive team. He seems to understand which players gel well together, figuring out the right defensive pairings,” LaFontaine said.

“When chemistry forms and players exhibit enjoyment while working hard, that’s when you can expect exciting developments.”
