Pat McAfee, known for his ties to the sports world, shared his thoughts following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The former Indianapolis Colts punter, now a media personality, expressed that Kirk’s name resonates with courage and the willingness to have discussions—even with those who hold opposing views.
While McAfee considers himself politically indifferent, he admitted that the events at Utah Valley University left him feeling shocked and distressed.
In a post on X, he noted, “I’m not a politician, but as a proud American citizen, I felt a mix of surprise, sadness, and anger today.” He mentioned feeling overwhelmed by the violence of a man being hunted down and killed simply for his opinions, which he found deeply troubling.
He continued, “This cannot be our reality. We must not allow ourselves to become a society defined by this kind of evil. Historically, good people have outnumbered the bad, but today has marked an alarming moment in our nation’s history.”
On his show, McAfee reiterated his lack of strong political affiliations, yet questioned what the recent tragic events indicated about society. “I don’t really engage in politics,” he explained, “but evidently, there’s something far more serious at play here. In the sports circles I navigate, the other side often isn’t heard.” He mentioned coming across news about Kirk and felt a personal disconnect, emphasizing the importance of family during such times.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death, stating, “Even the legendary Charlie Kirk is gone. Nobody understood the pulse of American youth quite like he did.” He spoke about Kirk’s commitment to truths that resonate in today’s society.
Following the tragic event, authorities released images of potential suspects, and the FBI announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Trump also revealed that Kirk would posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
