Patel promises justice for National Guardsmen shot in D.C. and describes them as 'courageous fighters'

Ambush Shooting of National Guardsmen Near the White House

On November 26, 2025, two soldiers from the West Virginia National Guard were shot near the White House in what officials are describing as a targeted ambush. During a press conference, FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the incident, referring to the Guardsmen as “heroes” and “brave warriors” for their service in the capital.

Patel condemned the act as a “heinous act of violence” and committed to bringing the assailants to justice, asserting that the FBI would collaborate with federal partners to prosecute the crime as an assault on federal officers. He also urged the public to pray for the victims and their families.

President Donald Trump, alongside other officials, including GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson, praised the Guardsmen’s courageous efforts.

In the immediate hours following the shooting, Patel, along with D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll and Mayor Muriel Bowser, provided further insight into the attack, although no motive has been disclosed as of yet.

Mayor Bowser described the suspect as a “lone gunman” and indicated that there is no current belief of accomplices. She asked the community to keep the wounded Guardsmen in their thoughts.

Patel stressed that those responsible would be held accountable, detailing that the FBI would use all available resources for the investigation, ensuring a thorough effort without reservations.

“This is an assault on a federal law enforcement officer,” Patel asserted. “We will treat it as such at the federal level.” He highlighted that the FBI would take the lead on this mission, supported by various federal agencies, with gratitude for the mayor’s cooperation.

While many are still in shock over the incident, the focus remains on the injured Guardsmen and their families during this difficult time.
