New Bipartisan Bill Aims for Healthcare Price Transparency
A group of senators is coming together to support the new Patients Deserve Price Tags Act, which seeks to solidify President Donald Trump’s executive order on healthcare price transparency.
This legislation is co-sponsored by Senators Roger Marshall from Kansas and John Hickenlooper from Colorado.
Additionally, Republican Senators Tim Sheehy of Montana, Chuck Grassley, and Joni Ernst from Iowa, along with Democrat Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, are also backing the bill.
Grassley shared his enthusiasm for the initiative recently on X, stating, “We need SUNSHINE on health care prices to bring accountability. Proud to join bipartisan Patients Deserve Price Tags Act. Consumers should know the price of health care services before buying. It’s common sense. Bill will hold healthcare providers accountable & give you timely, accurate info.”
The proposed bill will mandate hospitals to present clear pricing on their services while also ensuring patients receive itemized bills from their providers. This means that individuals will have a better understanding of their expected costs.
Essentially, this legislation aims to enforce the goals of Trump’s February executive order, which directed various agencies to establish regulations that promote price transparency in the healthcare sector.
The rationale behind these price disclosure requirements? To enable Americans to “shop for the highest-quality care at the lowest cost,” as articulated by the former president.
While Trump initiated these transparency measures during his presidency, they have continued under President Joe Biden, albeit with less stringent enforcement.
Ilaria Santangelo, a research director at Patient Rights Advocate, mentioned that this new bill will empower Americans to obtain essential care at affordable prices, which could ultimately lead to healthier and longer lives.
Price transparency has surprisingly gained bipartisan support in Washington.
In the House, Representative Ro Khanna from California introduced a bill in May to formalize Trump’s pricing policies, with Republican Representatives Anna Paulina Luna from Florida and Andy Biggs from Arizona as co-sponsors.
Earlier this year, Senator Dick Durbin from Illinois joined Grassley in urging pharmaceutical companies to be more forthcoming about prices in their ads.
