A Reflection on a Tragic Loss
In a bittersweet tale, fallen New York City firefighter Patrick Brady and his partner, Carla Jankei, hosted what guests thought was a fun-filled 40th birthday celebration on April Fool’s Day 2023. It turned out to be more than that; the couple unexpectedly tied the knot during the event.
As reported by The Rockaway Times, shortly after guests arrived, Pat and Kara vanished for a moment, emerging in different attire to reveal that this was no ordinary gathering. It was, in fact, their wedding day.
Those joyful memories resurfaced just hours after the heartbreaking news that the 42-year-old firefighter passed away from cardiac arrest while bravely battling a blaze in a six-story building in Brooklyn.
Brady’s legacy is tied to a family steeped in firefighting; he had two brothers, a cousin, and an uncle all part of the FDNY.
In a poignant post, his widow Carla shared meaningful quotes on her Facebook, emphasizing the importance of cherishing those who have departed. One quote reads, “Do you know that place between sleep and wakefulness, where you still remember dreaming? That’s where I’ll always love you and where I’ll be waiting.”
This quote, it seems, has been on her page for over a decade.
Patrick Brady, who joined the FDNY in 2014, was serving at Ladder 120 at the time of his passing. On Saturday night, just after 9:30 p.m., he collapsed while working on a rooftop on Kings Highway. He was immediately taken to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Brady’s brothers and parents supported each other during a flag-raising ceremony that followed. His cousin and uncle also served in the FDNY, which speaks volumes about the family’s commitment to service.
“His devotion to the fire department was only overshadowed by his love for his wife, Carla,” remarked Jake Toohey, a friend and fellow firefighter, during the ceremony.
