Finally it happened.
Videos of Patrick Mahomes attempting behind-the-back passes during practices and training camp have been posted to social media for years, and at one point head coach Andy Reid urged him to try it in a game, and now it’s finally happened.
He played his first extended preseason game on Saturday. Detroit LionsAfter a brief cameo appearance, Jacksonville Jaguars Last week, Mahomes threw a little shovel pass to Travis Kelce early in the game.
By hurling it behind:
As stated in the play call, the team had been talking about it for a while and “Andy wants him to do it in the game,” so he did it.
Another angle for the over the shoulder throw is as follows:
The play sparked immediate reactions on social media, including from Jason Kelce.

Of course, Mahomes still has his traditional throwing skills and some new faces to target him with. The Chiefs quarterback connected with speedy rookie Xavier Worthy for a touchdown to put Kansas City up 13-0.
Granted, it’s still preseason and we’re yet to see Mahomes’ magic from behind in a regular season game.
But I have a feeling that that moment is approaching.
