Mahomes Aims for 2026 Season Opener Return
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is looking to be back on the field for the team’s 2026 opener. He suffered a torn ACL and LCL during a playoff game against the Chargers and recently returned to practice for the first time since his surgery in December.
“I’m aiming for Week 1; the doctors say it’s possible,” Mahomes stated. “Still, you never really know how the recovery will go. My hope is to play without any limitations. We really want to come out healthy and have the best shot at winning. I’d like to participate in OTAs and training camp.” It seems there’s a bit of optimism, but it’s also clear that the timeline can be unpredictable.
Healing from Mahomes’ injury may take about nine months, depending on how his rehab progresses. If all goes well, he could be fully recovered by the week of September 10th.
This is the first significant rehab Mahomes has faced in his career. He has played in at least 14 regular-season games each year since taking over as a starter in 2018. He noted that his rehab has been progressing positively, as he’s met all the medical milestones required to regain strength and mobility. “We’re doing everything we can here in Kansas City,” he shared. “Julie, the assistant athletic trainer, has been amazing. The doctor sets goals, and I do my best to meet them, though sometimes I want to push harder. But, so far, things are on the right track.”
Regardless of whether Mahomes returns, the Chiefs are determined to bounce back after missing the playoffs for the first time in over ten years. The season ended with a disappointing record of 5-12, marking Andy Reid’s first losing season in his 13 years with the team.
When Mahomes is back, it’s possible he might be working with a new offensive coordinator. Current OC Matt Nagy is reportedly the frontrunner for the head coaching position with the Titans.
