Patrick Mahomes favored, Josh Allen close second

The 2024 Super Bowl capped off a wild season that featured some of the craziest line movements in NFL history, but the best part is that we’ll be able to do it again eight months later.

The opening odds for the 2025 NFL MVP award are +600 at BetMGM Sportsbook, with superstar quarterback and reigning champion Patrick Mahomes the favorite to win.

That includes Josh Allen (+800), Joe Burrow (+900), CJ Stroud (11/1), Lamar Jackson (12/1), Justin Herbert (14/1), and Dak Prescott (14). /1) follows.

As expected, the opening list has been filled with quarterbacks since 2012, when the award went to a signal caller every season.

Mahomes is a two-time MVP and earned hardware as the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2018 and 2022.

Before Mahomes won his first MVP award, there were two consecutive winners: current MVP Lamar Jackson and back-to-back winner Aaron Rodgers.

But it would be foolish to discount Bills quarterback Allen’s potential.

Allen was the only player other than Jackson to receive a first-place vote for the award, receiving the vote from FTN’s Aaron Schatz.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith called Schatz’s vote “a stupid home run vote” and said, “If I had voted against Josh Allen, I would have been scared to go back to the locker room.”

“That would put everything at risk,” Smith said. “You have to be objective when you vote. And the writer – I don’t know who the hell he was – but it’s embarrassing.”

But Schatz, who is not a Bills beat writer, defended his vote by saying that Allen scored the most touchdowns at the position this year.

Still, players had different cases at different points in the season.

Jalen Hurts was favored for much of the season, while Brock Purdy remained favored (around -300) for much of the second half.

One bettor had a Purdy ticket at 100/1. He could have won $200,000 by betting $2,000. They ultimately sold his stake on PropSwap for his $125,000 before Purdy was bombed against the Ravens on Christmas Day.

After that, his odds plummeted to over +900 at various sportsbooks.

In the end, it was one of the highest sports ticket sales in the history of the industry, as Jackson was almost unanimously named MVP.

Prescott tended to move closer to favorite status at various points throughout the season.

This award will be heavily criticized and talked about throughout the offseason and regular season.
