The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day, improving to 15-1 on the season and clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. But if Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes thought earning the No. 1 seed was the only reward for a big win, he was wrong.
After Kansas City won 29-10, NFL Network's Stacey Dales, on behalf of Netflix, which owns the NFL's Christmas Day rights, gave Mahomes and his favorite receiving target, Travis Kelce, a commemorative game. He presented what appeared to be a ball.
But there was something more to these “game balls.” To Mahomes and Kelce's surprise, it was a red velvet cake.
“I have another gift for you,” Dales said. “These are Netflix's custom Christmas game balls, and they're all yours. Now, I'd like you to come and pick them up. They're a little heavy, but you can open them.”
Mahomes asked nervously. “How do I open it?” I'm scared. “
After opening the ball, Mahomes yelled, “Oh, Red Velvet!”
Kelce immediately began happily eating the red velvet cake, but Mahomes refused.
“I'll be watching my weight until the playoffs,” Mahomes said. “I'm careful about my weight.”
Mahomes came up with a player who didn't care about his weight and decided head coach Andy Reid would enjoy slicing.
“Coach Reid is ready for that. We'll take it to him,” Mahomes said.
The idea that Mahomes didn't eat cake because he was “watching his weight” drew laughs on social media. Mahomes has long been teased for having a “dad body”, leading some to wonder if the three-time Super Bowl champion was concerned about his waistline.
Regardless, whatever Mahomes is doing is working. He has three Super Bowl rings and is ready for a fourth. After playing three games in 11 days, Kansas City will get a nice break before ending the season against Denver on January 5th.
