Following the game, an incident occurred when Lions defensive back Brian Branch disregarded Mahomes’ handshake attempt and became involved in a heated confrontation with Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. This escalated into Branch pushing Smith-Schuster, resulting in a brief but intense scuffle before both teams retreated to the locker rooms.

When NBC’s Melissa Stark questioned Mahomes about the scuffle, he said, “We play between the whistles. They can do all the extracurricular activities they want to do, but we play games between the whistles.” His demeanor shifted dramatically, his usual smile replaced with a more serious expression as he focused forward.

In the postgame press conference, Mahomes attempted to address the fracas: “That’s just the way it is at the moment. We have to move on.
