Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Questions NFL’s 18th Game
Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, expressed his concerns regarding the NFL’s decision to add an 18th game to the regular season. At 29 years old, Mahomes believes that an extra game could lead to a greater risk of injuries, which could detract from the quality of play during crucial matches.
He noted, “We’ve seen the amount of injuries piling up toward the end of the season, and it’s important to have the best players competing in the biggest games.” Much of this sentiment was shared during an interview. Mahomes also mentioned that he isn’t a fan of having an additional game, suggesting there should be more time for players to recover between matches.
“If there’s a way to introduce this 18th game, I think we should provide more rest for players,” he said, hinting at the need for better management of player health.
In contrast, New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton disagreed with Mahomes’ stance. He argued that adding another bye week wouldn’t necessarily be helpful, as the logistics of scheduling become more complicated.
Slayton remarked, “I don’t know about having two bye weeks. It just seems difficult to manage.” He made his comments during an appearance on a sports show, shedding light on the diverse opinions among players regarding the proposed changes.
It’s been noted by analysts that the NFL aims to capitalize on the potential of scheduling the Super Bowl during the President’s Day weekend, allowing fans to have a day off following the event. Overall, the future of the league’s scheduling remains uncertain, particularly regarding the integration of multiple bye weeks into the 18-game format.
