Texas Tech Linebacker Shines in Win Over BYU

In a standout moment during a recent game, Texas Tech Red Raiders linebacker Jacob Rodriguez struck a Heisman Trophy pose after making a key play in his team’s 29-7 victory against the BYU Cougars. This matchup was particularly notable, pitting the No. 8 ranked Red Raiders against the No. 7 Cougars.

Rodriguez’s performance energized the team in the third quarter. He intercepted a pass from BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier, tipping the ball to himself before making the catch. Afterward, he humorously posed on the ground, a moment prompted by his teammates.

Notably, Patrick Mahomes, a former Texas Tech player now with the Kansas City Chiefs, showed support for Rodriguez on social media, suggesting he should be considered for New York. Rodriguez expressed his hopes about being in the Heisman Trophy conversation following the game.

He had a remarkable game, tallying 14 tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery. Rodriguez’s impressive season stats include 74 tackles, five pass breakups, and two interceptions, contributing to Texas Tech’s commendable 9-1 record this year. The team is expected to move up in the College Football Playoff rankings when they’re released on Tuesday.

Rodriguez mentioned a lot of discussion about the Heisman with head coach Joey McGuire, who emphasized that the prestigious award shouldn’t just be for quarterbacks. He believes Rodriguez has played at an elite level, deserving recognition for his contributions on the field.

Historically, only one defender—Charles Woodson back in 1997—has won the Heisman Trophy, with Travis Hunter winning it last year while playing multiple roles for Colorado. Rodriguez clearly has aspirations to join that elite company.
