Patrick Mahomes’ Bold Move in Chiefs’ Victory
Patrick Mahomes’ antics during the Chiefs’ recent win over the Raiders went beyond just his impressive touchdown passes.
In the second quarter, with Kansas City leading, Mahomes positioned himself under center, seemingly trying to coax the Raiders’ defense into jumping offside, which could give the Chiefs another chance to move the chains.
When the Raiders held their ground, Mahomes raised his arms and exclaimed, “This freaking king will never work,” suggesting that the play wasn’t over yet.
That’s when the three-time Super Bowl winner took it upon himself to run the ball, converting a crucial first down to running back Kareem Hunt, pulling off a surprise play that impressed everyone in the booth. CBS commentator Jim Nantz reacted with enthusiasm, shouting, “Oh, they went!” while Tony Romo jokingly remarked, “He was cheating, I get it!”
The Chiefs showcased dominance throughout, blanking their AFC West rivals with a 31-0 scoreline.
Mahomes completed 26 of 35 passes for 286 yards, threw three touchdowns, and managed to do it without any interceptions. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew took over in the latter half.
After clinching their fourth victory of the season, Mahomes was casually asked about the controversial play and responded with a playful nod to his earlier commercial work.
“I think it comes from my State Farm commercial,” he said, adding that offensive coordinator Matt Nagy was the true mastermind behind the surprising tactic.
He elaborated, noting they had discussed executing a hard count to catch the defense off-guard. “I can’t remember who I saw doing that a few years ago, but we thought it was worth a shot,” Mahomes explained. “But at the end of the day, we just go and get it. Our offense did a great job pushing the ball, and Kareem is gold in those situations.”
The Chiefs are set to host their managers in the upcoming Monday Night Football game in Week 8.
