The Islanders have struggled with their power play lately, which makes their current stretch of 23 consecutive unsuccessful attempts a bit less alarming. They understand, however, that this isn’t a sustainable situation, as their conversion rate of 13.33% places them at the bottom of the league.
Still, this time around, they seem more engaged during 5-on-4 situations and are creating chances, unlike in previous seasons where they often seemed ineffective.
“What I appreciate about our power play currently is how we enter the zone,” coach Patrick Roy commented recently. “We really handle the puck well and maintain possession. From what I saw against Detroit, where we won 5-0, we had numerous quality shots and chances. We just need to capitalize on those opportunities.”
The visual evidence backs this up.
This year, the Islanders are successfully entering the offensive zone, which starkly contrasts with previous challenges where they frequently lost momentum trying to get past the blue line. Advanced stats aren’t even necessary to see this shift.
According to Evolving Hockey, they are among the top teams in the league, averaging the sixth-most shots on the power play and fifth-most shot attempts per 60 minutes.
In terms of expected goals, they sit ninth overall, while their high-danger chances rank them 11th. So, it’s not that they should be struggling as they currently are—it’s more of a mystery why they haven’t scored.
If anything, the statistics affirm the Islanders’ perspective. Their power play shows potential; they just need to find the back of the net.
“We just need one to go in to kickstart things,” said Matt Barzal. “We usually win games by a single goal, so I feel good about our power play. Honestly, I think it’s solid.”
“I’m not sure what the exact numbers say, but it definitely feels threatening when we’re out there. With our shooting skills, it seems inevitable that we’ll start scoring soon. I really like where we’re at.”
Meanwhile, Casey Cizikas missed practice for maintenance purposes, but Roy expects him to be ready for Wednesday’s game against the Bruins. On the other hand, Jean-Gabriel Pageau (dealing with an upper body injury) isn’t skating yet.
