Patrick Roy sees no reason to ‘panic’ after two straight Islanders losses

The Islanders’ two-game losing streak hasn’t set any alarm bells ringing, and the coaching staff has no intention of shaking up the lineup that won their first six games.

“We’re going to follow the program closely. I like the mix,” Patrick Roy told reporters after Friday’s practice. “But like I said before, we’re not afraid to try different things if necessary. But for now, I’m happy with what I’ve seen.

“I’m not going to panic after two games. Obviously, I feel like we didn’t do as well against Buffalo, but I think there’s a reason for that and we lacked support in a lot of situations. Tomorrow. I just hope I can do well.”

It won’t take the Islanders long to turn things around after Thursday’s 3-0 loss to the Sabers.

They play the Senators at home on Saturday afternoon before crossing the East River for a Sunday matinee at the Garden.

“They have a lot of young talent. I think they’re a little bit like Buffalo,” Roy said of Ottawa. “They love change. They’re not afraid to take chances. That’s why we want to get better on the forecheck and move the puck inside the opponent’s zone instead of giving the D an opportunity to dive into the rush.” We want to support each other well to make sure we keep it.”

After losing the challenge on Thursday to a goal from Zach Benson, Roy said Friday he still believes Ilya Sorokin was thwarted by Jordan Greenway, who was stationed in the crease.

“In my opinion, the third goal shouldn’t have been a goal. If it was me in the net, I wouldn’t be happy,” Roy said. “Ilya is a quiet person. He’s calm. I’m more like energy and everything. I might have gotten a little mad at the referee in that match.”

Robert Bortuzzo (high ankle sprain/LTIR) participated in Friday’s practice.

“He shows up every day with a great attitude,” Noah Dobson told reporters. “He’s a great guy to be around, so it’s great to have him back on the field again. I hope he’s back here soon.”

Brock Nelson was absent due to personal reasons.

Roy said Semyon Varlamov will start Saturday’s game in goal, while Sorokin will play Sunday against the Rangers.
