Shooting Incident Near CDC in Atlanta
A tragic shooting occurred on Friday near the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, involving a police officer. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White from Kennesaw, Georgia, is believed to have killed David Rose, a member of the DeKalb County Police Department, before 5 PM, as reported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
The situation escalated when White fired shots in front of the CDC campus, leading to numerous bullets breaking the windows of several buildings. GBI released images showing many shell casings littered across the pavement, a stark reminder of the violence that unfolded.
According to various reports, at least four CDC buildings sustained damage from the gunfire, which employees documented, showcasing the severity of the situation. The agency is well-known for its crucial work in disease research, making the attack particularly alarming.
Responding officers found Rose seriously injured and also heard shots coming from a nearby CVS pharmacy. After being rushed to Emory University Hospital, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Officers subsequently entered the pharmacy and discovered the shooter upstairs with at least one gunshot wound; however, it’s unclear whether these injuries were self-inflicted or caused by police intervention.
The motive behind the shooting remains unknown. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens referred to the suspect in vague terms, noting he was “a known person who may be interested in certain things.” It’s also worth mentioning that the area has daycares serving over 90 children, none of whom were harmed during the incident.
The GBI is taking charge of the investigation, with the FBI’s Atlanta office providing support. They have indicated that evidence gathering and interviews will take considerable time, as this case unfolds.
Officer Rose was a relatively new addition to the DeKalb County Police Department, having joined in September 2024. He recently graduated from the Police Academy and was known for his commitment to duty. His background includes service in the Marines in Afghanistan, and he leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children, a devastating loss for his family and the community.
Interim Police Chief Greg Padric expressed the community’s grief, saying, “We are seeking community prayers for his family, friends, and the entire DeKalb County Police Department.” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp spoke of the “tragic loss” of Officer Rose, emphasizing that his service would not be forgotten.
