Patriots advance to Super Bowl LX following disputed fourth down decision on Drake Maye

Patriots Reach the Super Bowl Amid Controversy

The New England Patriots have made it back to the Super Bowl, but a contentious play that contributed to their game-winning score has sparked debate among football enthusiasts on social media.

A blizzard significantly impacted the game, limiting both teams to just three points in the second half. Ultimately, a crucial field goal by the Patriots propelled them to Santa Clara for Super Bowl LX. Yet, the spotlight is on a pivotal fourth-and-one moment; many are questioning whether quarterback Drake Maye should have succeeded.

After a third-and-10 screen pass to tight end Hunter Henry fell a yard short, head coach Mike Vrabel decided to go for it. The play was a quarterback sneak, but Maye stumbled off the snap, giving the appearance that he might not have made it.

While officials deliberated and started moving the chains for a first-and-goal, Broncos head coach Sean Payton issued a challenge.

Upon examining the overhead tape, it seemed Maye was either just on the line or slightly short. However, due to insufficient evidence to overturn the call, the decision was upheld, allowing the Patriots a significant opportunity to take the lead.

Although New England failed to score a touchdown, a 23-yard field goal gave them a crucial three-point advantage.

This led to an active discussion online. One X user commented, “It’s definitely short, but according to NFL rules, I can see why they went with the on-field call.” They also questioned why not using modern digital measurements to assess the ball’s position.

Even without that technology, some users pointed out how the side officials appeared to rush the center of the field, indicating Maye was short, but ultimately, a downfield official called it a first down.

Then the weather worsened, causing more issues. The Broncos’ backup quarterback, Jarrett Stidham, took over after Bo Nix went down with an ankle injury. Stidham managed to score the game’s first touchdown with a deep pass to Marvin Mims Jr. setting up a play-action throw to Courtland Sutton.

However, that would be the only score for the Broncos as snowy conditions turned hostile at Mile High.

In the end, the Patriots made two vital defensive plays that secured their AFC championship. One resulted in a turnover on downs while the Broncos were facing a fourth and one.

Stidham attempted a last-ditch pass without being sacked, but it was ruled a backward throw, which the Patriots recovered. Shortly thereafter, Maye scored, tying the game at 7-7.

The Patriots are now set to watch the NFC Championship Game between the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams to see who they’ll face at Levi’s Stadium in two weeks.

Meanwhile, the Broncos will undoubtedly mull over what could have been, particularly regarding that pivotal play.
