In a surprising move, the Patriots have released veteran safety Jabril Peppers, despite previous assurances about his status with the team, as reported by ESPN.
This announcement follows shortly after the Patriots’ preseason activities, particularly on the heels of the team’s preparations for the season opener against the Raiders.
Peppers, who is 29, had signed with New England ahead of the 2022 season after leaving the Giants. He was gearing up for his fourth year with the Patriots.
Although he was considered a favorite during Bill Belichick’s tenure, his position under new coach Mike Vrabel appeared uncertain as training camp progressed, with reports of his role evolving.
In the last preseason game, Peppers started strong, but as the camp continued, he was moved down the depth chart behind players like Jaylin Hawkins and rookie Craig Woodson.
Last season, he had one of the better performances among safeties, ranking fourth, according to Pro Football Focus.
Initially re-signing for two years, he later extended his contract with New England for three years last July, having played in 38 games for the team and recording three interceptions.
Peppers’ time in New England was marred by an incident last October that led to his arrest for alleged assault and battery with dangerous weapons, although he was not found guilty. Following the incident, he missed seven games while on the Commissioner’s exemption list, leading to limited appearances.
Before joining the Patriots, he played three seasons with the Giants, during which he appeared in 32 games and made one interception. Peppers began his career with the Browns, who selected him 25th overall in the 2017 draft.
Looking ahead, it’s unclear whether Peppers will attract interest from other teams either through waivers or free agency once he becomes available.
Over his career spanning 99 games, Peppers has recorded seven interceptions.
