Patriots Hold On to Draft Drake Maye Despite Trade Offers

The Patriots faced significant trade proposals before ultimately selecting Drake Maye. During a recent performance, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer shared that two teams expressed interest, offering a substantial amount of draft assets to secure the North Carolina quarterback as their third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“The Vikings had presented an offer including their 11th pick, the 23rd pick, and a 2025 first-round selection,” Breer noted during the broadcast. “That’s essentially three first-round picks along with a pick swap. Meanwhile, the Giants made an offer involving their first-round pick, which was just No. 6, so they were only sliding down three spots, plus another first-round pick for 2025 and I think a third-rounder as well.”

However, the Patriots opted to keep their pick and selected Maye, believing he could be the franchise quarterback they needed following the struggles with Mac Jones.

“Those are some hefty offers,” Breer remarked. “Given their many needs, many argued they might have been wiser to trade down and address several positions. But they chose to stick with it.”

In hindsight, this decision seems to have benefited New England. Maye emerged as one of the standout players of the 2025 season, throwing for 1,522 yards, 10 touchdowns, and only two interceptions across six games. He also racked up 138 yards on the ground and scored two rushing touchdowns.

The Patriots, sitting at 4-2, are enjoying their best start since the Tom Brady era as they head into a matchup against the Titans in Tennessee this weekend.

Although they couldn’t land Maye, the Vikings moved up a spot to draft Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. He remains a hot topic as Minnesota’s quarterback of the future, albeit hindered by injuries in his initial seasons.

Earlier this April, the Giants selected Jackson Dart with the 25th overall pick.
