Patriots drop out of Brandon Aiyuk trade sweepstakes in NFL stunner

The Patriots appear to have dropped out of the race to acquire Brandon Aiyuk.

New England did indeed inquire about the 49ers receiver’s availability but chose not to look further. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news on Tuesday night.

The 49ers and Patriots had the framework for a trade if the Patriots could sign Aiyuk to a long-term contract. NBC Sports Bay Area reports: The recipient had no interest in going to New England.

According to the outlet, the Patriots had made a “huge” offer.

Several teams, including the Patriots and Browns, have reportedly expressed interest in Aiyuk, but the ongoing contract impasse seems likely to see the receiver dealt.

The Browns also have a deal framework in place with San Francisco, and the Steelers are in talks again with the Niners to work on a deal. Pro Football Talk reports.

The biggest issue with not getting anything done right now is that Aiyuk is seeking a contract extension with any team that is interested in signing him.

Aiyuk appears poised to become one of the highest-paid players at his position after Vikings star Justin Jefferson signed a four-year, $140 million contract with $110 million guaranteed earlier this offseason.

Aiyuk is in the final year of his rookie contract and is due to make $14.124 million in 2024.

The 2020 first-round draft pick requested a trade in July but did attend training camp, though he has not taken part in team activities.

Aiyuk rushed for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
