Patriots expected to bring A.J. Brown off IR to play against Jets following ankle injury

Drake Maye and the Patriots’ offense have managed to shake off their early-season struggles over recent weeks, and they’re set to welcome back one of their key players this coming Sunday against the Jets in Foxborough.

Reports indicate that A.J. Brown, a significant offseason acquisition, is likely to be activated from injured reserve. This marks his first return since he injured his ankle during the season opener.

Brown, a 29-year-old who has made three Pro Bowl appearances, was traded from the Eagles in exchange for a first-round draft pick in 2028 and a fifth-rounder in 2027.

He made his debut with three catches for 26 yards before a high-ankle sprain sidelined him in the third quarter against the Seahawks, a game which ended in a narrow 13-10 defeat.

Initially, Maye’s performance was rocky, with six interceptions and only one touchdown in the Patriots’ first three games (their record was 1-2). However, he rebounded well, throwing for 643 yards, seven touchdowns, and just one interception in consecutive victories against the Bills and Raiders.

Bringing back Brown should enhance the receiving team, which currently includes players like Romeo Dobbs, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III, while Mack Hollins is out due to a calf issue.

“You know, it kind of reminds me of basketball,” Maye reflected earlier this week. “When the best player gets double-teamed past half court, it opens up space for others, like leaving a corner three unguarded. That’s similar to having a talent like Brown on the field.”

“We’ve had quite a few guys making plays, which should really complicate things for opposing defenses. But, I know we’ve got a tough matchup ahead, so I’m eager to see how it unfolds.”

Brown returned to limited practice on Wednesday, with the team’s injury report noting his progress. He emphasized that the decision regarding his full return would focus on his long-term health, rather than just a short-term comeback.
