Patriots’ Jerod Mayo won’t commit to Jacoby Brissett after Jets dud

Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett's time as a starter may be over after he couldn't get anything done offensively in Thursday's loss to the Jets.

No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye made his NFL debut during garbage time of the Jets' 24-3 win and is now waiting to play as a mainstay.

New England coach Jerrod Mayo wouldn't say whether Brissett would remain the starter after the team's 1-2 start.

“I don't know,” Mayo said. He told reporters When asked about potential changes, he responded: “We're talking about it on a weekly basis … we're going to get together as a coaching staff.”

Maye was solid on New England's mop-up duty, picking up an 11-yard first down and leading the Patriots into the red zone before time expired.

But Maye was sacked twice on one drive, including on the final play, and continued to take hits throughout the drive.

Amazon Prime commentator Al Michaels said Maye received a “welcome to the league hit” on the third play when he was crushed after rushing for a yard.

“I thought it was a great opportunity for him to go out there and get some experience,” Mayo said. According to MassLive.

Mayo previously declined to name a starter heading into Week 1, telling reporters that although Mayo beat Brissett for the starting position in camp, he still gave the veteran pitcher the starting job.

“I'm going to say it's a true competition … and I would say Drake is ahead of Jacoby at this point,” Mayo said before naming Brissett the starter to open the season.

The offensive line's struggles are obviously a concern and could impact the Patriots' decision to make any changes going forward.

The Patriots quarterback has been sacked 11 times through three games this season, including seven of those coming on Thursday night.

But Brissett hasn't performed well as a starter, averaging bottom-five yards per pass attempt (5.1) and just 13 points per game (third-worst).
