Patriots Target Return to Super Bowl Following Difficult Seasons

From 2001 to 2018, the New England Patriots were synonymous with success, making it to the AFC Championship Game 13 times, a remarkable feat that included appearances in the last eight seasons of that stretch.

After a challenging six-year hiatus, when the team experienced some tough moments, the Patriots are now poised to reclaim their former glory.

With quarterback Bo Nix sidelined, the Patriots find themselves as the favorites to make a Super Bowl appearance—an impressive milestone in the post-Tom Brady era.

No one really saw this coming, considering the events leading up to this point.

In the first three seasons post-Brady, the team struggled significantly, posting records of 7-9, 10-7 (with rookie Mac Jones leading to a playoff berth), and then 8-9. The 2023 and 2024 seasons were particularly challenging, both ending with a disappointing 4-13 record.

During this time, the team transitioned through coaches. The last season of Bill Belichick’s long tenure was particularly difficult. Following Belichick, Jerrod Mayo took the reins but struggled to turn the team around and ended up being released after one season, which stirred quite a bit of controversy. It seems, however, that the change has paid off.

The team then brought in Mike Vrabel, a candidate for Coach of the Year based on his successes with the Tennessee Titans.

After a previous disappointing season, the Patriots rebounded spectacularly, achieving a 14-3 record. This marked their best performance since their last Super Bowl win in 2016.

Historically, only four teams have managed to win a Super Bowl within a year after finishing last in their division: the 1999 St. Louis Rams, 2001 Patriots, 2009 New Orleans Saints, and 2017 Philadelphia Eagles. What’s particularly interesting is that the Rams are the only team that went from a four-win season to lifting the Lombardi Trophy the following year. However, if the Patriots can achieve this, they would be the first to bounce back from losing 13 games to winning a Super Bowl.

As New England begins this new chapter, they open as a 5.5-point favorite, with Jarrett Stidham now stepping in as quarterback after Nix broke his ankle in a recent overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills.
