Patriots Owner Robert Kraft Supports Campaign Against Macklemore's Free Speech

Robert Kraft’s Controversial Decision Regarding Macklemore

Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, is standing firm on his choice to exclude Macklemore from upcoming events due to the rapper’s support for Palestine.

Kraft seems to believe that owning the stadium grants him some influence over Ed Sheeran’s concert lineup, but his recent public comments have raised eyebrows and, paradoxically, undermined his own standpoint.

In a statement released on Monday, Kraft emphasized that Gillette Stadium is committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere for all its guests. Yet, he contradicted that sentiment by explicitly closing the door on Macklemore, showcasing that this welcome has its limitations.

His statement continued with an assertion that the venue has a responsibility to prevent events from becoming a platform for hate speech. This claim walks a fine line, indeed.

Macklemore has voiced his support for Palestine; however, he hasn’t made any antisemitic remarks in his recent performances. Kraft pointed out that, based on what Macklemore has recently done, including content shared during Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, along with a broader context of antisemitic symbols and messages that have notably hurt the Jewish community, they decided his involvement in the concerts on September 25th and 26th would be unacceptable.

At 85 years old and a known supporter of the Jewish community, Kraft clarified that his decision isn’t about diminishing the plight of innocent Palestinians or silencing those who advocate for them. He acknowledged their pain, saying, “Their pain and loss are real.”

However, he added that such advocacy shouldn’t come at the expense of the Jewish community or shift focus away from Hamas—an organization designated as terrorist by the U.S., Canada, EU, UK, and Japan, responsible for great suffering among both Palestinians and Israelis.

Kraft attempted to deflect claims that he was leveraging his influence to prevent a performer from sharing his music and views publicly. “I agree with Macklemore. Too many lives have been lost, and there has been too much suffering,” he noted, but he also stated that sharing only selective information while ignoring Hamas’s actions leads to more division and hate.

He expressed admiration for Sheeran and his music, specifically praising his ability to unite people and spread joy, despite appearing to undermine part of that same tour by excluding Macklemore.

Kraft concluded by indicating his willingness to meet with Macklemore to discuss the issues at hand, suggesting a shared objective: peace for everyone, and an end to suffering and hate. However, the purpose of such a meeting remains somewhat ambiguous, given that Kraft has essentially barred Macklemore for exercising the very freedom of expression that a dialogue would presumably address.
