Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye floats theory on why NFL fans in UK should support his team

The New England Patriots are the latest NFL team to cross the Atlantic for games in the United Kingdom.

Players usually interact with international media after arriving in London. Drake Maye, who will make his NFL starting debut Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, had an interaction with a British reporter earlier this week.

During the exchange, May suggested that English soccer fans should root for the Patriots.

The former North Carolina State standout cited similarities between the names of the regions where the Patriots play their home games and the names of the countries that will host Sunday's NFL games.

“First of all, I think the team name has New England in it, and I think British fans are more likely to be drawn to that,” May pointed out.

The rookie quarterback also pointed to the Patriots' “pretty sweet” color scheme and expressed optimism about the team's future.

“Our colors are so nice and represent so many different things. And from there, I'm excited for the team, we're going to emerge, and we're going to have a lot of great seasons ahead. We're waiting for you, all the fans here who are already Patriots fans and are looking forward to seeing more of them.”

According to information from the NFL, the Patriots franchise's history dates back to 1959, when the team was founded as the Boston Patriots. The team was an original member of the now-defunct American Football League.

Boston-based businessman Billy Sullivan Jr. acquired the expansion franchise in 1959. It is reported that a panel of Boston area sportswriters participated in a naming contest and ultimately endorsed the Patriots nickname. Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Note that the team's current nickname pays homage to the American colonists' revolt against British rule in the 1770s.

The Patriots enter Sunday's game with a 1-5 record. The NFL began the International Series in 2007. Since then, the league has played games in London every year, except for the 2020 season, when all international games were moved to U.S. venues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
