Patriots trade Mac Jones to Jaguars to end three-year run

Mac Jones won’t be returning to the Patriots.

According to multiple reports, Jones was traded to the Jaguars on Sunday for a late draft pick.

The trade won’t become official until the start of the new league year Wednesday.

The trade ends a disappointing three-year tenure for Jones as the Patriots’ starting QB.

After being selected 15th overall and the fifth quarterback in the 2021 draft, Jones went 18-24 with 46 touchdowns and 36 touchdowns, leading the Patriots to a playoff berth as a rookie. After that, he was placed on the bench many times. Bailey Zappe’s past two years.

It’s hard to imagine Jones’ presence deterring the new Patriots from acquiring a new starting quarterback in free agency or the draft.

But now the job is officially open, which could impact the Patriots’ plans for the No. 3 pick, with the Giants moving from the No. 6 pick to Jaden Daniels, Drake Maye, or J.J. That could make it less likely he can trade up for McCarthy.

This trade would also come at the cost of the Jets attempting to trade Zach Wilson, another 2021 draft pick whose three-year tenure was even worse than Jones’.

In fact, five of Jones’ 18 wins came against the Jets.

The Jets gave Wilson and his agent permission to seek a trade.
