The 34-year-old forward joined the Los Angeles Clippers in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder prior to the start of the 2019-20 season, pairing him with Kawhi Leonard, who was acquired from the Toronto Raptors following a championship season.
But the idea of George and Leonard teaming up with the Clippers to take the city away from the Lakers never materialized, as both players dealt with significant injuries and the acquisition of James Harden last season meant the team finished as the fourth seed in the Western Conference before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

George played his most games with the Clippers last season and was named to his third All-Star game in four years, averaging 22.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in 74 games.
Early in free agency, the Clippers announced they were releasing George.
“Paul is an incredible talent and a premier two-way player, and we were fortunate to spend five years with him,” the team said. “During that time, he played in three All-Star Games, made the most three-pointers in franchise history and helped lead the team to unprecedented heights. His performances in Games 5 and 6 against Utah in 2021 will be memorable for everyone associated with the Clippers.”
“We made a lot of trades to pair Paul with Kawhi (Leonard), but instead we had five championship-contending seasons. We didn’t achieve our ultimate goal, but I’m grateful for the opportunity I had with Paul.”
The Clippers reportedly re-signed Harden to a two-year contract.
The 76ers reportedly acquired Kelly Oubre Jr., Eric Gordon and Andre Drummond prior to signing George.
