Remembering the Friendship of Paul Newman and Robert Redford
As the news of Robert Redford’s passing spreads, Paul Newman’s family reflects on the deep bond shared between the two iconic actors. Nell Newman, Paul’s daughter, noted their friendship flourished beyond their work in film.
Newman passed away in 2008 from cancer at the age of 83, while Redford died just recently at 89.
The pair starred together in two beloved films: “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” in 1969 and “The Sting” in 1973. Nell emphasized the strength of their connection, stating, “They had two great movies together, and it was a really strong bond. I think that’s what brought them together.”
Nell also acknowledged Redford’s role in inspiring her father’s environmental advocacy. “Bob was a quiet philanthropist,” she explained, recognizing how Redford influenced her dad in meaningful ways.
Describing Redford, she recalled, “He was a lovely guy.” She fondly remembers how he offered help when she graduated from college, highlighting his warmth during key moments in her life.
According to Nell, Redford regularly extended invitations to the Newman family to join him at Sundance Resort, showcasing his genuine character. “He was a normal guy who had a very strong interest in the environment. He was just a good guy,” she said.
When Paul Newman died, Redford expressed deep sorrow, stating, “I lost a real friend. My life and this country are better for him being in it.”
Redford’s death on September 16, 2025, occurred peacefully in his sleep at home in Sundance, Utah, a place he cherished surrounded by loved ones. His family has requested privacy during this time.
Many of Redford’s colleagues have shared heartfelt tributes, including Jane Fonda, who expressed a profound sense of loss, stating, “I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was beautiful in every way.”
Redford’s legacy continues through his wife, Civil Zaggers, their two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
