Paul Ryan Bashes ‘Trump Populism,’ Says It’s Now the ‘Establishment’

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan said in an interview Wednesday washington post He criticized former President Donald Trump and “Trump populism” and lamented that it has now become “the establishment.”

He said:

I am now in the minority in my party. I’m not in the facility. Frankly, I’m an anti-establishment Republican. And you, I think you can safely claim — I don’t like admitting this — Trump is the establishment, Trump populism is the establishment, and Trump populism is more of an isolationist tendency. And I think that’s wrong and dangerous, but I don’t think it’s representative of the majority of Republican voters.

Ryan also noted that during a recent visit to Moscow for an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin, show host Tucker Carlson spoke favorably about Moscow’s safety and cleanliness. ” and criticized him.

“That was a surprise to me. You know, frankly, that’s the one that takes the cake,” Ryan said of Carlson’s remarks, noting that it aroused sympathy in the United States and made it more isolationist. He said it would be “extremely dangerous”.

Ryan said:

What worries me more, and not just Tucker, is that this is all indications that they’re gaining sympathy in America. And they are contributing to the cultivation and development of isolationist forces in my party and in our country, which I believe is extremely dangerous.

They are cultivating people who don’t want to reduce NATO or adhere to NATO, and clearly former President Trump is pushing this path as well. So what I’m very concerned about is that they’re helping to edit a line of thought, an isolationist, pro-Putin, pro-Russian, ultimately pro-authoritarian line of thought. . It’s dangerous for all democracies, but it’s also dangerous for our own democracy.

“And what I see is…this is a small chapter in that story,” Ryan continued. “I didn’t watch the whole interview. I watched a little bit of it, but it seemed like some kind of infomercial to allow Putin to push his propaganda.”

He praised former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a Republican who ran against President Trump, calling it “healthy” for the party.

“I think she’s bringing up healthy dialogue and raising important issues. So I think it’s healthy for our party to have her remain in the race,” he said.

He also argued that Trump is beating Biden in the polls not because Trump is a strong candidate, but because Biden is a weak candidate.

But he also acknowledged that Trump easily eliminated other Republican primary candidates.

He claimed that the charges against him increased his popularity by making him a victim.

“These charges made him a victim. It gave him a very believable victim story. [and] I implanted MAGA into him. “People want to see fighter jets,” he said.

Mr Ryan did not rule out a return to politics, saying he was enjoying life but was “deeply concerned about our country”.

“I’m young enough to have a third career. I’m on a second career right now. Who knows? I don’t know. But frankly, that’s not really on my mind right now,” he said. said.
