Paul Simon says his ‘whirlwind’ marriage to Carrie Fisher caused an ’emotional upheaval’

Paul Simon has opened up about his “whirlwind” relationship with the late Carrie Fisher.

In a new documentary that delves deeper into the icon’s career, titled “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,” Simon details his tumultuous romance with his ex-wife, which quickly became He explained why it was “complicated”.

“Carrie was more show business oriented,” he says in the film. “I went with it. That’s the world she grew up in. She was used to it. She was used to a lot of press and stuff like that. It wasn’t intimidating or anything. She knew how to operate it, and I had it done well for her. She was really good at it, and I wasn’t.”

“There were a lot of things that were noteworthy back then, but they were also two people at the peak of their careers, and that’s always complicated,” he added. “Everything was kind of a whirlwind. Carrey was completely in a fame bubble because of Star Wars.”

The two met in the late 1970s but didn’t marry in August 1983. They divorced in July 2024 after less than a year.

After their breakup, Simon admitted that he had made “all kinds of mistakes” during his marriage to Fisher.

“I mean, what was I thinking? I certainly wasn’t thinking about life, you actually have to stop liking things,” Simon said in a resurfaced interview conducted shortly after the breakup. He spoke at “Marriage is so…difficult. You have to be focused. It doesn’t all happen at once, it doesn’t all happen in the media. All types of mistakes happen on top of mistakes. It overlaps with.”

“I realized that emotional turmoil can be exhausting,” added Simon, who eventually married singer Edie Brickell. The couple have three children: Adrian Edward, Lulu, and Gabriel Elijah.

For Fisher, marrying Simon was clearly “the wrong thing to do.”

Fisher, who died in 2016, wrote: “I mean, if you looked at me, at best you’d think I was an interesting girlfriend. But wife? You’d be disappointed.” She said so in her memoir, Wishful Drinking, according to Vanity Fair. “Poor Paul. He had to put up with so much from me.”

“I think at the end of the day, I fell into the headline of ‘Good anecdote, bad reality.’ I was really good at material, but when it came to day-to-day life, I was doing more than he could handle.” ” said the actress, who is married to Brian Lourd and has a daughter, Billie Lourd.

The two continued to date on and off for years after their divorce, but eventually ended their relationship and moved on.
