Poll Indicates Ken Paxton Leads Over John Cornyn in Texas Senate Runoff
A recent poll suggests that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton holds a lead over Senator John Cornyn in the Republican Senate runoffs. It seems that a significant number of former supporters of Rep. Wesley Hunt are shifting their support to Paxton.
According to the findings reported by quantum insight, as of Tuesday, Paxton was ahead of Cornyn by 48.8% to 41.3%, with 9.9% of voters still undecided. The poll also reveals that nearly 58% of Hunt’s previous supporters now favor Paxton, indicating a consolidation among voters who aren’t backing Cornyn, following the primary on March 3.
The survey highlighted strong voter commitment. An impressive 88.1% of those questioned indicated they are certain to vote, while 78.7% expressed clarity in their choice. Furthermore, Paxton’s base appears somewhat more steadfast, with 88% of his supporters certain of their vote, compared to 86% of Cornyn’s backers.
Looking into voter confidence, 92% of Paxton’s supporters expressed certainty about voting, which is a bit higher than the 86% from those backing Cornyn. The analysis categorized the runoff voting base as mostly solid, with a strong conviction of participation and not very fluid in their choices, stating that Paxton holds a clearer lead in terms of poll support, favorability, and effectiveness perceived by the electorate.
The Quantus Insights data also explored the influence of endorsements, particularly from President Donald Trump. About 25.3% of respondents claimed they would be more likely to support Paxton if endorsed by Trump, while 63% stated it wouldn’t make much difference. In contrast, for Cornyn, only 18.3% said they’d be swayed by an endorsement, with 70% indicating it wouldn’t affect their choice.
These results align with previous findings. A survey commissioned by Democratic candidate Rep. James Talarico indicated that Paxton was leading Cornyn significantly, 53% to 37%, among likely Republican voters. Additionally, Paxton boasts a favorable rating of 64%, while Cornyn’s stands at 45%, which coincides with an unfavorable rating of 31% for Paxton against Cornyn’s 47%.
Cornyn’s campaign is facing increased scrutiny, especially after revealing his support for President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees. He voted to confirm several nominees during the 117th Congress, when Republicans held control, allowing confirmations without needing a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Kamala Harris. Some see the implications for the Trump administration as quite severe, given the confirmed justices’ rulings impacting immigration, fraud enforcement, and tariffs.
The Texas Republican Senate runoff elections are set for May 26, with the winner slated to compete against Democratic candidate Talarico in the general election.
