PayPal Integrates with OpenAI’s ChatGPT
PayPal has made headlines by becoming the first payment platform to integrate its digital wallet into OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This move comes shortly after Walmart’s founder and CEO, Deborah Weinswig, decided to end the company’s partnership with OpenAI, aimed at enhancing shopping experiences as the holiday season approaches.
On Tuesday, following the announcement, PayPal’s stock saw an uptick in early trading. The company revealed plans to adopt the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which would enable ChatGPT users to make instant payments through PayPal. This integration allows customers to pay for purchases using their bank accounts, PayPal balances, or credit cards, while also benefiting from PayPal’s safety features for both buyers and sellers.
Furthermore, PayPal is set to assist with merchant payment processing via OpenAI’s Instant Checkout. The company emphasized that this initiative connects their extensive global merchant network to OpenAI, potentially creating a marketplace where countless small businesses and major brands can interact within ChatGPT.
It’s an interesting strategy from PayPal, aiming to tap into the vast ChatGPT user base. PayPal’s CEO, Alex Chriss, noted that ChatGPT is utilized by hundreds of millions for daily tasks, while over 400 million use PayPal for shopping.
In the wake of this development, Microsoft also announced a significant new agreement with OpenAI, which boosted its stock prices. Under this agreement, Microsoft will support OpenAI’s plans to restructure into a public benefit corporation, combining profit motives with public interest. Following the restructuring, Microsoft plans to invest around $135 billion into OpenAI Group PBC, which would give Microsoft approximately 27% ownership when all shares are accounted for. Prior to this funding round, Microsoft’s ownership was about 32.5%.
This new arrangement will keep OpenAI as Microsoft’s main AI partner, maintaining exclusive rights to OpenAI’s intellectual property. Additionally, OpenAI will continue to rely on Microsoft’s Azure as its exclusive cloud service until they achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI).
